Need a Major? Why Not Communication?

I realize that a lot of people have no idea what they want to do with their lives, which often means that they have no idea what to major in. A lot of times kids are pressured to go into engineering, architecture, or medical school because they are told they’ll make a lot of money. But let’s be honest: not everyone loves math and science, and not everyone will be happy doing that for most of their lives.

“But I can’t be a [insert dream major here]; I will be poor for the rest of my life because I won’t be able to get a job!” you might say to yourself. Well, with our society that may sound true, but here’s opportunity knocking at your door! Knock, knock. You better answer it.

Communication! You’re probably thinking that it’s an MRS. degree. Wrong again. Communication is a versatile major; you can use it to be anything you want. And if you have trouble putting thoughts into words, or public speaking, it’s a great way to learn those skills. Most of you are probably thinking:  ”What exactly is communication?” That is an excellent question, and I’m still working on answering it in a short, concise way even though I’ve been studying it for two years! But what I can do is give you an idea. Here are some elements of a Communications major you might not have considered.

  • Public Speaking. Yes, as a Communications major you will probably have to speak in front of an audience. There’s a comm class for that, and it helps. I’ve gotten over the sound of my voice, and realized that nobody cares about how you sound, unless it’s truly awful.
  • Technology Skills. Yes, you will probably be using a computer. And there are even toddlers who are better at computers than some adults these days! It definitely helps any career path if you know MS Office, Photoshop, and even basic coding. The more you know, the better.
  • Rhetoric. I’m sure you’ve heard the timeless quote “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.” And it’s true. Look at all of the great public speakers in history who have used their voices and their arguments to compel entire nations!  Trust me, words go a long way.

In case you still aren’t convinced, here’s a list of the highest-paying jobs in America. ALL of them require good communication skills! A Communications major can be a great way to make your future successful, and you can always choose to minor in something more selective. So if you aren’t sure what major you’re interested in, consider Communications, a major that will give you skills you really will use every single day.
